Cosmetic formulation: cosmetic regulations

Cosmetic products and cosmetic formulation are not subject to authorisation. Before placing them on the market, it must however be ensured that they comply with the requirements and regulations of both the national and the European cosmetics law. Regulatory authorities monitor the compliance of a cosmetic formulation with these regulations.

Manufacturers, importers and distributors of cosmetic products must ensure that the cosmetic products and thier cosmetic formulation that they place on the market fully comply with the respective legal requirements (self-regulation).

Before a product or a cosmetic formulation can be launched onto the market, it has to pass extensive tests and pre-market safety evaluations, in order to scientifically prove that the product or cosmetic formulation is safe for both humans and the environment.

Cosmetic formulation: product stability & preservation

The aim of stability tests is to find out how a cosmetic formulation or an active ingredient is altered if it is exposed to specific conditions (temperature, humidity and light) for a certain period of time. From these results the durability and the recommended storage conditions of a product can be deduced.
